Requirements of an Annotation of a Second or Subsequent Major or Honours Designation on a Baccalaureate Degree Previously Conferred at UBC Okanagan
Students who have previously been granted a B.Sc. at UBC’s Okanagan campus may return via two pathways:
- Students Returning for a Second Degree:
Students may apply for readmission by following applicable application timelines. With this pathway, students are required to pursue a different bachelor’s degree and must meet all the requirements. Students will receive a second degree and parchment upon completion. Students pursuing this path should consult with an academic advisor prior to application.
- Students Returning to Complete a Second Major or Honours in an Existing Degree:
Students may apply to complete the requirements for an additional major or honours designation relevant to and within the same B.Sc. degree. This path is intended for students who have gained some real world/work experience, or have recognized a need to upgrade their degree (e.g. honours); students may apply for this path no earlier than six months after their degree conferral date, and they must be admitted before they register for courses that will count toward the Honours or second Major. Students apply to the Faculty of Science Dean’s Office.
- Students seeking to complete an honours degree must meet all prerequisites and have a Department-approved honours thesis application before the re-entry application will be reviewed.
- Once a student has been approved for re-entry, they will register for the next academic period.
- Upon completion of their subsequent program, students will surrender their existing parchment. Senate will then confer the new degree, a new parchment will be printed, and the official transcript updated.
Second Degree Studies
Students with a recognized undergraduate degree from another institution may be eligible to pursue a Bachelor of Science as a second degree if they have a focus of study that is distinct from the discipline(s) of the first degree. Applications are evaluated in accordance with the requirements for Admission from a Post-Secondary Institution.
The pursuit of honours, double major, dual degree, or minor options during a second degree is normally not permitted; for an exemption, students must obtain approval from the Program and Associate Dean. Students wishing to take courses that are prerequisite to another program should consider Unclassified studies.
For a second degree, students must complete all B.Sc. degree and program requirements and must complete a minimum of 60 credits while enrolled at UBC Okanagan in their second-degree program. Students must also satisfy the requirements outlined here: Second or Subsequent Undergraduate Degree, Diploma, or Academic-Credit Certificate. It is expected that the Science Upper-Level Requirements will be completed with second degree courses; these include at least 36 upper-level Science credits, and at least 42 upper-level credits.
Second Degree students are advised to consult with Academic Advising, as well as Departmental Advisors, regarding possible exemptions from degree and specialization-specific requirements based on prior study.
