Dual Degree Program Option: Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Language Fluency

Program Overview

This dual degree program combines the Bachelor of Education and one of the following language fluency degrees:

  • Bachelor of Nsyilxcn Language Fluency
  • Bachelor of NłeɁkepmx Language Fluency
  • Bachelor of St’át’imc Language Fluency
  • Bachelor of Secwepemc Language Fluency

The dual degree program option enables students to become fluent speakers of an Interior Salish language and certified teachers qualified to teach in First Nation schools, public school districts, and independent schools throughout Interior Salish homelands in British Columbia.

It is expected that the language fluency program will be completed in four years and the B.Ed. will be completed in an additional 11 months (full time) to two years (extended).

The program is designed primarily for students intending to pursue the Teaching Adolescents (Grades 6-12) pathway; however, it is also open to students interested in teaching younger grade levels through the Teaching Children (Grades K-5) pathway. The program prepares graduates for recommendation to the British Columbia Teacher Regulation Branch for certification.

Admission Requirements

Students with Year 3 standing in a language fluency degree program may be eligible for admission to the dual degree program option.

Admission to the dual degree program option is conditional; students must successfully complete specific language fluency degree program requirements and meet B.Ed. admission requirements (which may be completed while enrolled in the language fluency degree program).

Criminal record checks and other regulatory requirements must be satisfied prior to participation in field experiences.

Program Requirements

Students in the dual degree program option are required to complete 177 credits to earn both degrees. The language fluency degrees require the successful completion of 126 credits. The Bachelor of Education normally requires the successful completion of 60 credits; however, 9 credits earned during the language fluency degrees are double counted and apply to the B.Ed.

Students must complete all requirements for the language fluency program as specified in the Academic Calendar for the dual degree program option:

Students must complete all Bachelor of Education requirements as specified in the Academic Calendar. However, they are not required to take EDUC_O 452, EDUC_O 472, and EDUC_O 473, as these requirements are fulfilled through courses completed within the language fluency degree and double counted for the B.Ed. Specifically:

  • INDG_O 405 satisfies the requirement of EDUC_O 452
  • SECW_O/NSYL_O/NLEK_O/STMC_O 332 satisfies the requirement of EDUC_O 472
  • INLG_O 380 satisfies the requirement of EDUC_O 473
