Overview
Understand the present by studying the past. Read broadly, think analytically, write effectively, and inform policy. Historians examine evidence and arguments to understand the relationship between ideas and actions, and individuals and social institutions. UBC Okanagan’s history program offers a wide variety of foundational and advanced courses that cover world regions and time periods. The program prepares students for graduate and professional programs, and to pursue a variety of careers.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Communicate their understanding of essential elements of history.
- Develop a broad understanding of historical periods, events, and trends before and since the twentieth century.
- Engage in exploration of primary and secondary sources through the application of historical methods, research, and analysis.
- Make oral and written scholarly arguments and critically evaluate those of others.
- Employ critical thinking, research and writing skills.
- Use methods of historical analysis to interpret past events and present trends.

History Honours Program
The Honours degree program in History enables students specializing in History to increase their concentration in History and to gain research experience in the completion of an Honours thesis. Students are expected to satisfy high levels of competency in their academic achievement and to successfully complete a research project under the supervision of a faculty member. The faculty supervisor must be approved by the department head.
Admission Requirements
- Third-year standing;
- Minimum of 12 credits of History;
- Minimum overall average of 72%;
- Minimum average of 76% in History courses; and
- Submission of an application form with supporting materials.

- An overall average of at least 76% in History courses;
- An overall average of 72% in all courses.
Minor in History
To complete a Minor in History, students must accumulate no fewer than 30 credits in History out of the 120 credits required for the B.A. degree. At least 18 of these credits must be numbered 300 or above.
A maximum of 3 credits from the following courses may be counted toward a History Minor: ARTH_O 315, 316, 320, 321, 370, 375; ECON_O 330, 331; ENGL_O 340, 344; PHIL_O 419.
